I’m just going to own it: I’m pretty well known for my positive attitude and boundless energy. Heck, I was even born on the 4th of July and I’ve been a firecracker since birth. Because of my personality, people often ask me for tips to keep them feeling happy, empowered and forward-thinking on their good days, as well as for advice on how to stop that I’m-in-a-downward-doubt-and-fear-spiral on a bad day. Today I’m going to share one of the techniques I use daily to do just that, but first, a little known fact about yours truly…
Here’s a secret: The reason I know so many effective strategies and shortcuts to feeling more positive and productive is because I need them just as much – heck at times even more – than the next guy or gal. Since I was a child I’ve known the push-pull between feeling awesome, feeling driven, and feeling “made to do this” and feeling fearful, anxious, overwhelmed or doubtful. That same thing in me that pushes me to do and pursue what I love also leads me to question where I’m doing enough or doing it right. What drives us also drives us crazy, you know what I mean? Because I’ve experienced this mental teeter-totter ride in work and life for years I’ve also mastered how to pull myself out of moments when thoughts and attitudes that do not serve me get the best of me. One of those things I do to instantly snap my brain out of those moments is repeating positive affirmations.
Affirmations are like mental reset buttons that leave me feeling present, positive and anchored into my intentions. And they do it fairly instantaneously.
When you feel that way on the inside, the outside stuff just falls in to place: work, life, love, the works. The power of your thoughts cannot be minimized or neglected, if they aren’t serving you, they’re working against you.
Buddha said it best: “What you think you become. What you feel you attract. What you imagine you create.” I have a feeling that you, like me, want to become, attract and create awesome, fulfilling and beautiful things and one of the fastest ways to get there is by changing your thoughts.
Below you’ll find 12 of my favorite affirmations. Here’s what I want you to to do with them:
- Starting today, find a quiet, distraction free place (if you’re reading this and you’re a mom, this may mean your car or a bathroom).
- Read each affirmation, and then speak it out loud, more than once. I like to do it facing myself in a mirror or closing my eyes and letting it wash over me and into me. Yes, you may feel silly at first but just go with it.
- Go through the list I’ve got for you below and pick out a few affirmations that speak to you and what your soul is craving.
- Keep your affirmations nearby and the next time your brain starts messing with you and taking you down a road that’s going to result in a mental dead end, just turn your attention to your affirmation list. (*True story, I also keep my favorites on a giant white Post-It near my desk just in case I need a quick mental shift).
