I have had the immense pleasure of connecting with Alexis Wolfer when her idea for The Beauty Bean, an online magazine covering wellness, beauty and fitness was in its early days – I actually had the chance to help launch it with her! Fast forward to today and both Alexis and her company are leaders in the “real and realistic beauty revolution” and have been applauded by everyone from Forbes Magazine and the Today Show to Hollywood celebrities. She’s also added published author, certified holistic nutritionist and of course real beauty activist to her resume.
I’ve watched as Alexis grew her company, wrote a book, became a regular TV personality and noticed something else about her journey: her quality of life and self care improved as her success grew. It’s palpable. When I see something and someone like that – doing what they love and making sure they enjoy their lives while they do it, I get excited and want to know more about them – what makes them tick, have they always wanted to do this, what routines are vital parts of their every day life? Fortunately Alexis agreed to be our first subject in my 10 Questions with… series so those answers are accessible to us all!
The morning routine that most prepares me for a successful day includes…
A big glass of water, an equally big cup of coffee, and a great workout – followed by a delicious breakfast.
If I could do anything else in my wildest dreams for a living it would be…
I would do something that let me travel the world! Maybe making documentaries (which I’m wholly unqualified to do) or delivering babies and working in maternal healthcare (which I’m even less qualified to do!).
As a child I thought I’d be this when I grew up…
Man, I thought I would do EVERYTHING. From an archeologist to a reconstructive surgeon, I literally wanted to be everything! Little has changed!
The books that have inspired me most are…
I’m always reading and constantly inspired, but if I had to pick one it would have to be The Alchemist. It’s one of my favorites!
My favorite self-care rituals are…
I LOVE getting a facial at Carasoin in Beverly Hills, getting my butt kicked at SoulCycle, and spending a day in the kitchen cooking healthy recipes – or just running down the street to Café Gratitude for a made-with-love vegan meal.
A behavior that wasn’t serving me that I have since changed…
Buying into the idea that working harder meant I was working better. Both in business and in the gym, these days I’m much more focused on working smarter so I can enjoy life more.
When I’m about to do something that makes me nervous or challenges me, I do this to get clear headed and focused…
I take deep breaths – and usually call my mom and dad for a pep talk! It’s so important to have cheerleaders who keep you positive when you’re an entrepreneur and I’m super lucky to be genetically related to mine!
If you were to look at my desk or workspace you’ll almost always find…
A copy of my book, of course! – as well as GIANT jug of water (nothing keeps me feeling my best like staying hydrated), a facial mist (which I spritz on my face throughout the day for added hydration), and Colorescience powdered SPF.
If I had one week during which no work was allowed, I would choose to spend my time…
Exploring the world and reading a great book!
What do you wish you’d known when you first began doing what you love for a living…
When I first started I often compared myself to my friends who took more traditional career paths (mostly as lawyers), which was something I had considered, and I saw how much money they were making and I thought that meant they were more successful. Today, not only do we make more similar amounts (although they still definitely make more!) but I LOVE my life and they’re pretty miserable and I know now that success is so much more than a paycheck and am damn glad I’m doing what I love!
